To encourage residents to bring nature back into their gardens, the City of Melville has teamed up with five other local governments to partner with Perth NRM to support their ReWild Perth Project. Your garden, no matter the size, can be an important steppingstone for wildlife to live and move throughout our city. ReWild Perth will empower you to incorporate local plants and habitat structures in your garden, courtyard, or balcony. Learn how to start a ReWild Garden and access resources about local species.
As part of this project, ReWild Perth will be running the following events at Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre for the 24/25 financial year:
- 2 x ReWild Talks
- 1 x Wildlife-friendly Garden Workshop
- 1 x Build Habitat Workshop
- 1 x Stall at City of Melville’s 2024 Eco Action Expo
In addition to the above, 2 x ReWild Your School activities will be offered to local schools through Jane Goodall Institute delivery partnership.
What is ReWilding?
‘Rewilding’ is a global movement that aims to restore natural ecosystems.
In some contexts, this refers to the reintroduction of long-lost species and is usually done in national parks by governments and scientists. However, in an urban setting, it’s also important to concentrate on residential homes and gardens, which can recreate environments that will support the native wildlife we have displaced.
This is particularly important in urban areas like Metropolitan Perth, Peel and Bunbury, because homes and residential buildings make up more than half of the available land. Very few ‘green spaces’ remain, and most of it is reserved for people as landscaped parks or ovals.
Unfortunately, we’ve lost or displaced many species which once called Perth home, including some which could only be found here! ReWild Perth gives you the opportunity to take charge of your space and bring nature home.
