Your bins and what goes in them

City of Melville households and most units and apartments receive a:

  • Red-lidded general waste bin for general waste (collected fortnightly)
  • Yellow-lidded recycling bin for recycling materials (collected fortnightly)
  • Lime green-lidded FOGO bin for food organics and garden organics (collected weekly)

Recycling bins and general waste bins are collected on alternating fortnights. Use the widget at the top of this page to find your bin days.

A-Z item guide

Some items are hazardous and should not be placed in your bins. This includes aerosol cans, batteries, chemicals, e-waste, gas bottles & extinguishers, light globes & tubes, motor oils, paint, printer cartridges and more. Find out how and where to dispose of these items.

Did we miss your bin?

If we haven’t picked up your bin, it may be because it was contaminated with the wrong materials, it was too heavy, or it was put in a location where the truck was unable to access it. If this is the case, we will leave a sticker on your bin and a letter in your mailbox letting you know why we were unable to collect it.

If we haven’t picked up your bin by 2.30pm on your scheduled bin day and no sticker or letter has been left, we may have accidently missed your bin. If so, please fill in our online form and we will empty your bin within 3 working days.

Bin capacity & compassionate services

If your bins easily fill up, see how you can reduce your waste and Waste Items for Drop Off.

Still having capacity issues? Request a larger bin or request additional bins. Note that fees & charges apply.

Compassionate waste services & help moving your bins

We assist people with a medical condition in providing more bin capacity (for general waste) and help taking bins to the kerb and back (for all bins) at no additional cost.

All residents must apply for compassionate waste services in writing. Evidence or support from a health professional is required. Each request is assessed on a case-by-case basis, we will work with you to help you through the process. You will not be eligible for priority services if there is someone living at your residence who is able to take bins out.

We are gradually transitioning units and apartment complexes to the 3-Bin FOGO system. We will notify affected properties when the change is about to take place.

At this stage, the 3-Bin FOGO system is only available for residential properties. We are currently investigating the possibility of offering the system to local businesses.
