Comments, ideas and suggestions received through an engagement process help inform the City of Melville and its Council in decision making processes. Information is collected online via Melville Talks using various tools such as surveys, interactive maps, forums etc and in person using live polling, video, pen and paper.

Depending on whether the information is quantitative or qualitative in nature different methods are used to analyse and report back to the community, the Council and City Staff.

A public submissions process (public comment or community consultation period) takes place when :
  • a proposal seeks to vary a planning policy or development that is likely to impact nearby properties
  • the City is seeking to make changes to a planning scheme (e.g. a re-zoning), local planning policies, local laws, structure plans, master plans, policies and City-wide strategies.

During these processes the community and/or stakeholders will be invited to complete a submission on the proposal. Submissions received by the City will be considered as part of the assessment process, however submissions do not bind the City or Council when making a decision.

A summary of comments and/or a tabled submission report may be included in publicly available Council reports or notice. Personal details such as name and address and/ or identifiable information will be removed from these reports unless agreed upon when completing the submission.

The City of Melville incorporates demographic questions in its surveys to ensure that the feedback collected accurately represents our diverse community. This approach allows us to engage a wide range of stakeholders and tailor our communication strategies effectively. By analysing demographic data, we can identify segments of the community that may not be adequately represented, enabling us to create targeted outreach opportunities. We also use this information to monitor, meet targets and evaluate our efforts.

To maintain the integrity of our feedback process, we implement measures to prevent duplicate responses, ensuring that we capture distinct viewpoints. Participants have the option to refrain from providing identifiable information if they choose.
